Character & Story Implications

Your asexual character may be just as human as the rest of your characters, but your other characters may not necessarily see them that way. Here are a few things to consider in your writing:

Because of the popular Dehumanized Asexual trope and its prevalence in the modern world, other characters might misunderstand your character at a fundamental level. It’s possible that some of those characters might even fear your character, seeing them as “unnatural” and “abnormal.”

On that note, however, be careful when incorporating cluster B disorders with asexual characters.3 Often, writers combine the two when creating a stereotypical evil mastermind, and while evil characters can both be asexual and have a cluster B personality disorder, using those as the basis for their evil is both an inaccurate depiction of asexuality and a stigmatizing depiction of real people with those disorders. Besides, it makes for boring writing.

If your character is actually evil, then consider giving them a more human motivation for their villainy. Asexual people still care about people, ideals, their personal goals, and things humans generally care about.

An asexual villain with a vendetta against the hero who accidentally killed their best friend via collateral damage is a lot more interesting than an asexual villain who is evil because “they’re different and different is evil.”

If your character is not actually human, and you still want them to discover what it’s like to be human, consider utilizing things like platonic love, duty, loss, and sacrifice to humanize them. Sexual attraction isn’t the only thing that makes a human a human, and in the end, people are much more complicated than writers often make characters out to be.
